SEVENTEENTH CENTURY
1602 Cipriano de Valera, an exiled "heretic",
publishes in Amsterdam his revision of Casiodoro de Reina's Castilian
Bible. This version would be circulated in Spain by the Bible Society
from the middle of the nineteenth century.
1603c. Completion of Juan de Arjona and Gregorio Morillo's
translation of La Tebaida.
1605 Cervantes publishes the first part of Don Quijote
(with apologies for previous datings)
1607 Juan de Jáuregui translates Tasso's Aminta.
1608 Lope de Vega acts as an agent of the Inquisition.
1609-13 Expulsion of the last Moriscos.
1609 Garcilaso de la Vega Inca, in Toledo, writes his
Comentarios reales de los Incas for the king. The text includes translations
of two Quechuan lyrical texts.
1613 Francsco López Cuesta translates Epistolas
el glorioso Doctor de la Yglesia San Geronimo.
1613-14 Góngora publishes Soledades.
1625 Tirso de Molina is exiled from Madrid.
1627 Spain suspends payment of its debts and devaluates
its currency by 50%.
1630 The flow of gold and silver from the American colonies
begins to decline.
1639 José Pellicer de Ossau y Tovar translates
Obras de Quinto Septimo Florente Teruliano.
1640 Portugal regains its independence.
1641 Olivares tries to bring Jews into Spain in order
to promote commerce.
1647 Sicily breaks away from Spain.
1648 Naples breaks away from Spain.
1648 The independence of Holland is recognized.
1651-57 Publication of Gracian's El Criticón.
1660 Basilio Varen de Soto translates Enrico Caterino
Davila's Historia de las Guerras Civiles de Francia.
1665 (or 1650?) Juan Eusebio Nieremberg, a Jesuit born
of German parents in Madrid. translates Thomas à Kempis's Imitacion
de Christo from Latin.
1674 Francisco de la Torre translates John Owen's Agudezas.
1682 Gómez e la Rocha y Figueroa translates Manuel
Tesauro's Filosofia Moral.
1699 Mateao Ibáñez de Segovia translates
Quinto Curcio Rufo: De la vida, y acciones de Alejandro el Grande.
