Asymmetric pieces
Joan Panisello's pottery presents two fundamental aspects: one of them is the shapes which still have, but freely interpreted certain characteristic of the vase, and another one which is basically developed in two dimensions.
In all these works of art we can appreciate a tendency to revolve themselves as if in a thoughtful attitude. In the stoneware and china vases, their last stage, which has to be moulded on a lathe, gives more evidence of the free growing to which it has derived. They have something of living beings which are rehearsing, their final shape in different directions. The 'bodies' broaden irregularly, avoiding any possible convention and leaning towards one side or the other, while the 'mouths' point or lengthen themselves almost threateningly, like antennas. We will t discover the roots of this organic condition in the attraction that this artist feels for the plural and varied forms that nature has-flowers, plants, the sea, birds, animals and people- and also for what he considers as his dreams, where things related to UFO'S should be included.
Those vases, although having some human connotations, are not symmetrically shaped: all the opposite, asymmetry is the fundamental factor, in fact they were born in the lathe but several surgical operations, by means of cuts and grooves, totally transform the pieces. All of this can only reaffirm his total coincidence with the main trend of ceramics nowadays, which mainly looks for irregularities which can seem accidental which he takes advantage of. So the latent life in these pieces is not predictable, unlike many other artists, but one of an unusual aspect, which given us a great esthetic impression.
