Zoltan Kodaly:The Deum of Buda- Castle
1882 – 1967Budavari Te Deum
Written in 1936 for the 250th anniversary of the liberation of Buda-Castle from Turkish occupation, for mixed choir, four soloists and orchestra. It was first performed in the same year in Budapest in the coronation Cathedral (Matthias church). The first performance abroad took place soon after in London by the BBC Choir and Orchestra.
In remembering the heroes of “Budavar” the piece is military in character from the very first triumphant trumpet-call.(Incidentaly a number of Catalan fighters were amongst the liberating army).
The Te Deum is Kodaly’s most concentrated work, uniting Gregorian elements, Bach’s polyphony, harmonies of Palestrina and the pentatony of folk-songs.Kodaly’s creative genius encompasses all these into an harmonious entity.
