20250914 :
Hello, Alisa.
I have a question for your tech team.
My "gominipc" works perfect, with a Mint Linux in it. It is connected to a BenQ monitor, model EW3270U, using HDMI.
Problem (small) description :
Once or twice a day, the screen goes blank and stays blank for 2-3 seconds. Then, image comes back and all keeps working perfect. There is NOTHING in the Linux logs, sure.
Environment when this happens :
1) when I switch on a LED strip I have behind the screen.
It happens the first time I switch it on, (not always) then does not happen if I go off/on again and again.
2) when I connect a USB pen.
This produces a blank screen maybe 40 % of the times, but again, after the first "blank screen" I can plug another USB and it does not happen.
3) when I hit hard the table with my fist it is very probable the screen will go blank, then normal again. Here also the fenomenon does not repeat if I hit the table again.
4) some random moment of the day, not described in (1) or (2) or (3). But never again in next 15 minutes minimum.
What do you think ?
To me it seems as a kind of static electrical charge, acumulating (on the screen ?) and producing the blank screen once in a while.
Please let me know if your technical guys have any idea.
As you can see, I can live with that small inconvenience, but I saw your garanty extension and said "Lets try".
Thank you for your help.

how to resize SSD

chatGPT prompt :
I have a 1 TB SSD disk, split into two : 500 GB are NTFS with windows, 500 GB are ext4 with Linux.
What is the easiest way to resize it, making 200 GB for Windows and 800 GB for Linux ?

Preparation :
In Windows disable "Fast Startup"

Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Change settings currently unavailable → uncheck Fast Startup

Then run a filesystem check - open Command Prompt as Administrator and run

chkdsk C: /f

Reboot if requested.

Easiest & safest method: GParted Live USB

pulseaudio

PulseAudio is a general purpose sound server intended to run as a middleware between your applications and your hardware devices, either using Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) or Open Sound System (OSS).

Pulseaudio serves as an intermediate software layer that routes audio between applications and hardware devices. It provides a whole suite of tools for managing sound

System Monitor

To start the System Monitor automatically whenever you power on your Linux Mint machine and log in, you can add it to your Startup Applications.

Using the Graphical Interface (Cinnamon/MATE/XFCE)

  1. Open your Application Menu (the Mint icon in the corner).
  2. Search for "Startup Applications" and open it.
  3. Click the + (Add) button at the bottom.
  4. Choose "Choose application".
  5. Search for System Monitor in the list, select it, and click Add Application.

If you want to customize how it starts (for example, delayed by a few seconds to let the desktop finish loading), you can select it in the list after adding it and adjust the "Startup delay".

display free space for 2 hard disks

Prompt Gemini : linux mint desklet to display 2 hard disk free space

Creating a custom desklet for Linux Mint (Cinnamon) typically involves writing a small JavaScript applet, but for most users, the most efficient and powerful way to display system stats like disk space is using Conky.

However, if you want a native desklet specifically, here is how you can set one up or use the best existing tools : the "Disk Space" desklet

  1. Right-click your desktop and select "Add Desklets"
  2. Click the "Download" tab and click "Yes" to update the cache.
  3. Search for "Disk Space"
  4. Click the "Download" icon next to it.
  5. Switch back to the "Manage" tab, select "Disk Space" and click the "(+) Add to desktop" button
  6. To display 2 disks:

To monitor two disks you actually use multiple instances of the desklet rather than trying to fit two paths into a single widget.

  7. Right-click on your desktop and select "Add Desklets", in the "Manage tab" select "Disk Space", and click the "(+) Add to desktop" button (twice)
  8. to display second disk space :

    1. Right-click the desklet on your desktop and select "Configure"
    2. In the settings, you can add multiple paths (e.g., / for your system and /media/user/data for your second drive).

Software Rendering, Mint initial menu, before password

The Software Rendering Mode is specifically related to the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint, and it is a mode in which you run the system when there's some sort of a problem with Cinnamon being able to directly access your video card, or acquire the resources it needs in order to run efficiently.

Mint desktop

Cinnamon is Mint's default desktop environment

Cinnamon uses GPU acceleration via Muffin, its window manager.

sebas@minie:~$ echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP X-Cinnamon
(russian) keyboard

  1. start "System Settings"
  2. under "Hardware", click "Keyboard"
  3. select "Layout" and "(+)" add a new keyboard
  4. click "Options" and set "Switching to another layout" to be "Alt+Space", as Android
  5. now you can easily switch keyboards via the keyboard menu in the lower right corner of the screen (or via the keyboard shortcut you defined in the previous step)

Terminal font size

  1. start "Terminal"
  2. select "Edit" and "Preferences"
  3. "Text", "Custom Font", "Monospace 18"

Mint file manager

We have "Nemo" v5.8.5 - display it using "Help" +"About"

Start it using "nemo ." - linuxconfig.org

If "Open in Terminal" does not work, use

$ nemo -q
Folder item count

  1. select "Icon view"
  2. adjust zoom level (slide at bottom right) so the "items NN" fits in the screen
Filenames that start with "."

Display/hide files that start with . or end with ~ using "CTRL" + "H"

Recent Files

Nowadays you can pull up the menu, type 'privacy' and click on the 'privacy' icon that should appear. Turn off 'remember recently accessed files'.

Bookmarks

Go to a directory and press "CTRL" + "D" - the location is stored in "Bookmarks", as in browsers ...

Nemo display possibilities

When you open a directory using "Nemo", there are 3 possible views :

"Save Picture As" view modes

Under Linux Mint, when I display a picture and go "Save Image as" ... i get into Nemo in "list view" mode - I would like to change it to "compact view" - can it be done ?

In Linux Mint, the "Save As" dialog is actually handled by the GTK file chooser, not Nemo itself.
Because of this, the view settings in your Nemo file manager don't always sync up with the save dialogs in your browser or image viewer.

Solution : use "dconf-editor"

How to make Cinnamon beautiful

<Ctrl><Alt><Esc> reloads Cinnamon without closing any open application !

<Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> kills the X server and returns you to the graphical login screen
All loaded applications will be terminated without prior confirmation. So use it only if your GUI has got in an unresponsive state.

You are currently running in fallback mode. if you suspect the source of the crash is a local extension, applet or desklet, you can disable downloaded add-ons using the checkbox below. Do you want to restart Cinnamon ? ▢ Disable downloaded applets, desklets and extensions

la pantalla s'apaga

Això passa en conectar un nou dispositiu (as USB) però també "random", sense acció externa.

20250904 - provo de inhibir la apagada per inactivitat :

  1. "Power Managment"
  2. "Power Options"
  3. "Turn off screen" := "never"
em quedo sense teclat

Obre un Terminal i enganxa-hi aquesta comanda :

sudo modprobe -r atkbd && sudo modprobe atkbd

Que hi ha :

sebas@minie:~$ xinput list ⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ⎜ ↳ PixArt USB Optical Mouse id=9 [slave pointer (2)] ⎜ ↳ USB-compliant keyboard Mouse id=11 [slave pointer (2)] ⎜ ↳ USB-compliant keyboard Consumer Control id=12 [slave pointer (2)] ⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)] ↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ Power Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ USB-compliant keyboard id=10 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ USB-compliant keyboard System Control id=13 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ USB-compliant keyboard id=14 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ USB-compliant keyboard Mouse id=15 [slave keyboard (3)] ↳ USB-compliant keyboard Consumer Control id=16 [slave keyboard (3)] sebas@minie:~$ cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/control auto

Què fer per "ressuscitar-lo" sense reiniciar

Pots provar de forçar el sistema a tornar a llegir els dispositius d'entrada sense tancar la sessió. Enganxa això:

sudo udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=input

Aquest comandament obliga al sistema a tornar a detectar tots els teclats i ratolins.
