The MMAL occupies an old house
that is locally known as "ca Batistó", a house
built at the end of the 17th Century by a wealthy family of liqueur
merchants. It then became the property of the Andreu family for
250 years, Known today as "ca Andreu".
In 1973 the house was bought by
Alcover Town Council and the museum was moved from its original
home in the building known as "portal de Sant Miquel".
In the early 9o's, the museum
still needed more space for both its new and original collection,
so it was decided to buy the adjoining house and restore its interior.
To be able to connect the 2 buildings from the interior, "ca
Batistó" underwent structural works and the upper
floors and rooms of "el portal de la Saura", an archway
which formed part of the old defensive wall that protected Alcover
from the 14th to the 17th Century, were annexed at the end of
the 19th Century.
Nowadays, after being opened to
the public, renovated and equipped with all the facilities of
a modern building, the museum focuses on its content and offer
on the new paleontological exhibition and the tour of the noble
house, so that the visiting public can enjoy its beauty and peculiarity.
