WiFi under Linux SuSE 8.2

We know we have a Cisco Systems PCI Wireless LAN Adapter on the PCI bus.
The MPI 350 is a "Aironet 350 Family" card. Specs :

Wireless LAN Feature

 Compatible with IEEE 802.11b high rate standard to provide wireless Ethernet speeds of 11Mbps data rate.
 Modulation BPSK-1 Mbps, QPSK-2 Mbps, CCK 5.5 and 11 Mbps.
 Allows auto fallback data rate for optimized reliability, throughput and transmission range.
 Supports wireless data encryption with 128-bit WEP standard for security, EAP and LEAP.

Security is addressed with WEP (up to 1024 bit) and other security management provisions as enabled by the firmware and the host driver.
Dual diversity antenna connectors supported for the multi-path environment. Frequency 2400-2500 MHz, useable 2412-2484 MHz in 1 MHz steps. External ON/OFF switch support & LED indicator. Bus mastering PCI interface with full support for power management including ACPI power states D0-D3, CAM, Max PSP and Fast PSP. 4M flash was designed to allow for the PXE code (remote boot), which is a BIOS extension.

Have a look at 8.1

Fem-ho !

  1. Get latest package : 13/01/2004 : airo_mpi-20031220.tar.gz
  2. kernel 2.4.20 : has my Kernel CONFIG_NET_WIRELESS=y ? Yes !
  3. kernel 2.4.20 : tinc airo a /home/sebas/tmp

  4. modprobe airo_mpi => can't locate module airo_mpi
    "man modprobe" : uses /lib/modules and /etc/modules.conf

  5. insmod airo_mpi => airo_mpi.o: init_module: No such device

  6. /etc/modules.conf : alias eth1 airo_mpi
    Mind /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth1 !
  7. dmesg
      airo_mpi: Probing for PCI adapters
      airo_mpi: Finished probing for PCi adapters. RC(-19).

    RC = -19 means -ENODEV from pci_module_init
  8. insmod airo.o ok !
    From /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
     lsmod displays Module airo, Size 38760, Used by unused

    FORGET ABOUT AIRO.O !!!

Problemes

WiFi under Knoppix 3.3

Això ja funciona ! [ HW : T30 + MPI 350. SW : Knoppix 3.3 ]
Thankx, Albert !

     1 - get airo_mpi-20031220.tar.gz from http://bellet.info/laptop/
     2 - tar -zxvf <filename>
     3 - cd airo*
     4 - make && make install
     5 - insmod airo_mpi
     6 - edit /etc/modules, so airo_mpi is loaded at init time.
     7 - edit /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth1 ( see man iwconfig )
     8 - use
          lsmod
          iwconfig
          iwlist eth1 scanning
          iwlist --version molt interessant
          ifconfig -a
          ifdown eth1, edit interfaces, ifup eth1
