- NFC = Near Field Communication
- NFC readers work at a maximum range of about 4 inches, 10 centimeters.
- NFC Tags does not work on metal surfaces.
If you need to use the NFC Tags close to metal, you should choose the On-Metal NFC Tags which are specially made for this purpose.
Arquitectura
NFC tags are passive, meaning they don't have any power source.
Instead, they literally draw power from the device that reads them, thanks to magnetic induction.
When a reader gets close enough to a tag, it energizes it and transfer data from that tag.
NFC tags architecture is similar to RFID tags.
They both have a bit of storage memory, along with a radio chip attached to an antenna.
The only real difference is that NFC tags are formatted to be used with NFC systems.
NFC network modes
There are three modes in which NFC tag and reader works : card emulation, reader/writer and peer to peer (or point to point)

NFC card emulation mode
In this mode, usually an active device reads the passive device.
Following are the steps involved in card emulation mode:
- • step-1: NFC reader oscillates 13.56 MHz RF field.
When the card comes near to the RF field, it gets power due to EM (electro-magnetic) coupling and gets connected with the reader.
- • step-2: reader sends commands using RF field.
- • step-3: card responds to the reader as requested.
