'Lebanon, heaven and hell' - Interview to Rami Nassif

Rami is a lebanese student of the Master in Automotive Engineering, at Chalmers (Göteborg). Fan of joking, automotive world, and partying (and kicking David's ass or Joe's, own words), in this article he will talk about his country, from a cultural and touristic point of view but also explaining a bit the present situation. After watching the news showing the conflict during last season, sometime one might get in mind some impressions that do not fit with the reality. Therefore, next words are the point of view of a lebanese citizen, who can let us get a closer look to their culture, villages, and way of doing.

How is Lebanon ?

Lebanon!!! It’s fine, how are you!!! Well, Lebanon is a country with mediterranian climate, nice slopes for skiing during the winter, good food, wonderful nightlife, lots of ruins from ancient civilizations, multi-cultural place, multiethnic (Armenians, kurds, syrians, Palestinians, etc…). It is impressive how close the mountains are to the coast that creates very nice landscapes, and very nice ski places. You should check it out!

What's the think you like the most in Lebanon? And the worst ?

Lebanon itself... well the culture the differences that you encounter between one city and another. The variety of beliefs, point of views and their diversity are just wonderful. The flexibility of dealing with people is really amazing. As for the worst thing, well it’s the politics and Lebanon’s neighboring countries, they are just a pain is the…… back.

What's happening there now?

Entertainment!!! We like to be the center of attraction, so every now and then we do something to attract the eyes of the international community. Check the news… hehehehe. .

Why did the war start ?

War!!! Which wat??? Oh that war! Well the Hizbullah bastards next to the borders, were playing hide and seek with the psychotic Israeli soldiers. So the Hizbullah bastards won that game and kidnapped two soldiers from their opponents. But the psychotic Israelis were sore loosers and declared war on Lebanon. As for the historical aspect there are several historical conflicts between Lebanon and Israel, and Hezbollah are an Iranian and Syrian funded militia and they act under their command in Lebanon. Israel more than 20 years ago captured some lebanese people who are still imprisoned in Israel. So Hizbullah one day decided to cross the borders between Lebanon and Israel and capture some Israeli soldiers in order to exchange prisoners. This action was done by hizbullah without consulting the Lebanese government. As a result Israel declared war on Lebanon (not hizbullah) hopping to retrieve their soldiers. The war ended no body achieved his objectives and there was a total destruction and each side kept their prisoners. In my opinion they are all a bunch of bastards and the best way to solve all the conflicts is through negotiations and not confrontations.

Situation now:

Love and harmony between the Lebanese government and the Hizbullah opposition, and as the Lebanese proverb states: “Wa min al hobi ma katal” which can be translated to a fatal love. Everything is good as long as everybody is healthy.

Which places would you bring your friends to?

Touristic places and party places. To my village. To Monot street, a very nice street in Beirut full of bars, pubs and night clubs, to down town Beirut. I would also take them to nice places like Jeita groto, ancient places like Byblos (potential of being declared the oldest city in the world, 6000-7000B.C.), Baalbak (biggest roman temple still standing in the world), different palaces full of roman, bizantine, greek, othmanian, French, and crusader’s ruins. Moreover I would take them to the wonderful Lebanese mediterranian beaches to enjoy themselves. Foreigners should come to discover this small and marvelous piece of land!

How are the lebanese girls ?

Nice, cute, sociable, some are Gourgeous and few are ugly! And the rest are in between!!!

How would you define the lebanese people

Friendly, spontanious, extreme (positive meaning), generous, and most of them are theistic.

Which religion is the most important ?

Christian and Muslim religion. 1% of the people is Jew.

Which is the traditional food in there?

We have Kafta, kibbe, tabouli, fatoush, homos, etc.... In this video you can watch all them.

What about nightlife ?

There are a lot of very nice places where you can spend the night till dawn, one of the places opens the roof of the main room during the sunrise allowing the people partying to witness the sunrise as they party!

About the sports, the most popular one now is basketball and then football. It used to be football, but last 7-8 years switched because we got better results in Basketball. The main important sport clubs are Sporting Beirut, Sagesse, Ansar and Nijme.

My recommendations to the people all over the world are bring your asses to Lebanon and enjoy this marvelous country. Visca el Lebanon i visca Catalunya !!
