View Full Version : 137 Gb Limit

I bought a 200 Gb hard drive and installed it on my new computer running Windows XP. The motherboard supports Ultra DMA/ATA. Instead of getting a 200 Gb hard drive though, it's at 137, which is a common problem I've heard when installing large hard drives. I know this topic has probably been covered before, so if you know a forum where it has been, that would be good. If not, does anybody know if the program Partition Magic can help me out? Thanks.

I am assuming you have a mobo thats supporting this capacity...
If this is a maxtor drive there is a utility that will probebly take care of it. If not then you most likely installed XP and it has yet to have sp1 installed or you have since installed sp1 but havent used the disk managment tool to partition the rest of the drive. you can also use partiton magic to resize the current partitons.

This is the maxtor utility link but if this drive is not a maxtor i dont reccomend using this tool. ;)

Thanks, did not know about the Disk Management tool, I will do that right now. Thanks again.

At first, the Disk Management Tool did nothing for me, but I downloaded and ran a tool from Western Digital that was supposed to circumvent the 137 gb limit. The drive still only has 137 but now in the disk management tool I found an extra 57 gb unused partition. I formatted it as drive E but I want to add it to drive C. Any quick way to do this without buying Partition Magic?

There might be a freeware one around, I do know that partiton magic has a free trial i dont know if it will allow you to partition anything with it but it may. You can search google for words like Free Partiton Program or similar words and see if anything comes about. You need to know that partitioning program sometimes dont work well and you might end up formating the entire disk in the end so i would definitly have my files backed up.Thats also another reason to make sure you get one that is known to work :).
