July,1943. In the Zitadelle operation, the northern sector commanded by Feldgeneral Model must attack the Russian defensive belts to gain a deep penetration in the Kursk salient. A powerful attack is neccesary to obtain the initiative, but early the things become worse to germans. The attack was halted in several places, only in the samodurovka area, Germans supported by a company of Tigers tanks obtained some success...but not enough to achieve with the general objectives.

Two Bridges at Nijmegen

20 September 1944, Nijmegen, 15 km S. of Arnhem, Holland. Historical scn (Recommended for PBEM). By 20 September, 1944, three days into Operation MARKET GARDEN, the British 1st Airborne Division was surrounded in Arnhem and fighting for its life. The relief force driving towards Arnhem from the south, Horrocks’s XXX Corps, was stalled at Nijmegen, where the Germans had built up a defensive position around the two bridges spanning the Waal River. If Operation MARKET GARDEN was to have any chance of success, these two bridges had to be taken by the Allies, and quickly! Troops
from the 504th PIR of the crack US 82nd Airborne Division were selected to cross the Waal River in boats, while a mixed Anglo-American force was to assault the bridges from the southern bank. Taking the bridges would allow XXX Corps’ stalled drive to resume, and, if they could link up with Urquhart’s paratroopers in Arnhem in time, potentially end the war several months early. Naturally, the Germans would do anything and everything in their power to prevent the bridges from falling into Allied hands. The weak German forces which had been holding Nijmegen at the beginning of the operation were reinforced by units of the 10th SS-Panzer Division “Frundsberg”. Although it would have made sense to simply drop the bridges into the river, thus permanently ending the threat that MARKET GARDEN posed to Germany, Hitler insisted the bridges be held with an eye to future offensive operations. The bridges' garrison and the men and machines of the "Frundsberg" were to hold the bridges at all costs, only blowing them up as a last resort to prevent their capture by the Allies and only with permission from the German high command. This scenario
recreates the American paratroopers’ operation to take the bridges of Nijmegen. Designer note: From Historical point of view, tanks from Irish Guards supporting the 504th PIR’s river-crossing operation were used like support role. Players can decided how use them in other unhistorical way. Thanks to Huib Versloot and Alex (Steelrain) for your help with maps, testing and OOB.

In the middle of April of 1941, Gen. List Armies were ready to give a definitive stroke to allies forces taking Athens and some strategical points to control the Mediterranean sea. The allies leaded by Gen. Wilson ordered a full withdrawal to the Peloponesus to allow the scape of all forces. A delay tactic was used by Australians and British to gain some time. A good line of defence was the Corinth canal. This feature with only a bridge will be the next objective to German paratroopers. Two para batalions (I, II Abt) from Fallschirmjaeger Rgt 7 were assigned to take the bridge and wait to friend units from 1 SS Mot. Infantry Regiment LAH. These units had to make the contact with Oberst Stumme´s paratroopers before any allies counterattack. In the western areas of Peloponesus, German units already were in land crossing the Corinth gulf by boats. A small recce force from the SS Aufklarung Abt 1 LHA leaded by Kurt Meyer supported the operation from the SW. The allies units in the Canal area were a mixed force of Autralians (6th Inf. Div), Neozealanders (2d Inf. Div), British (1st Tank Bgde) and Greeks (2nd Army) supported by light armor and AA guns. The Codename assigned to the operacion was Hannibal.

Cisterna: A hot welcome for Rangers

Cisterna di Littoria, Italy 1944. (Best H2H oponent). On 30 January, after Anzio operation, the 3d Division launched its drive to cut Highway No. 7 at Cisterna. To spearhead the attack, General Truscott picked Col. William O. Darby's Rangers, veterans of Tunisia, Sicily, and Salerno. The 1st and 3d Ranger Battalions were to jump off one hour before the main attack and infiltrate under cover of darkness four miles across the fields to seize Cisterna by surprise and hold it until the main attack came up. The 4th Rangers and the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry, were to follow an hour later up the Conca-Cisterna road. Patrol reports and a careful reconnaissance of approach routes indicated that the enemy had not yet been able to consolidate his defenses in front of Cisterna; Colonel Darby believed his men could sift through. When dawn revealed the head of the column moving down the road to Cisterna, a strong German force led by three self-propelled guns suddenly opened fire. The Rangers deployed quickly and knocked out the three guns. But as the light improved, German machine guns, mortars, and snipers, concealed in houses and haystacks or dug in all around them, trapped the Rangers in a hail of fire.

Rangers at Gela

Gela (Sicily).H/H. Following the Allied victory in Tunisia, the next step at hitting Axis-held Europe was the capture of Sicily. Mussolini boasted that the island fortress of Sicily could never be successfully invaded because of its highly developed defenses. The entire invasion coast was heavily prepared to repel invasion; 13 divisions, 3 of which were Panzer units, were occupying the island. The plan of allied attack named Husky operation must, for the Americans, take the south central coast. The most highly defended and most strategic spot on the island was Gela, with its key rail and road network, airport, landing facilities. T he mission of occupying this critical spot became the job of a special task force of Darby´s Americans Rangers. The first battalion supported by the 1st Batt of 39th Engineer Combat Regiment and naval gunfire had to open a beachhead in Gela defenses meanwhile the Gavin´s 82nd US Airbone Division (505th Rgt.) took strategic areas some kilometers inland to delay every German or Italian attempt to counterattack and get off the Rangers to sea. The initial success for the Americans was dangerously scared by elements of the Hermann Goering Panzer Div. (KG Schmalz) and the 1st Batt of Italian Livorno Division.Tigers and German fallchirmtruppen against Gavin´s light armored paratroopers. This was not a balanced fight until the arrival of Rangers supported by tanks. The Rangers were leading the way again...

Belvedere´s Blizzard

February, 13-18, 1945
Three mountain peaks, Mte Belvedere, Mte Gorgolesco, and Mte della Torraccia, dominated the tactical situation in the North Apennines in the spring of 1945. As long as the enemy held these peaks he protected all routes of approach to his supply and communication line, Highway 64 (The Pistoia-Bologna Road). They were also the highest terrain features remaining in his hands for his defense of the Po Valley, his most prized possession in Italy. Beyond them the terrain gradually slopes away until the Po Valley is reached forty miles away. Three Allied efforts in the fall and winter of 1944 to capture Mte Belvedere and Mte Gorgolesco had been unsuccessful, but in the attempts, it was learned that the German would do anything within his power to hold, and by now he had had several more months to perfect his defenses. Truly, this mountain-mass looked like an impregnable fortress for the enemy. His observation was perfect for miles in all directions and it was doubtful that a force, large enough in size to assure success, could be assembled in position to attack him without discovery. Such discovery, of course, would permit the enemy to man his carefully prepared positions. From these, because of their perfect observation, and because an attacker would have little cover on the naked slopes, the enemy could practically rest assured that his murderous artillery, mortar, and automatic weapons fire would repel any attack.
Fifth Army was well aware of the strength of this enemy position, but at the same time, it realized that some means must be found to capture these peaks, otherwise the Allied advance might be held up indefinitely, or be forced to turn to the west through even more difficult terrain. The arrival of the 10th Mountain Division in Italy provided Fifth
Army with the very tool for which it had been waiting these many months. Here was a fresh division, which had been specifically trained for mountain warfare, and if these peaks were ever to be taken, surely the 10th Mountain Division must do it. Without further delay it was, therefore, decided that the 10th Mountain Division, under IV Corps, would attempt this operation during the second week in February.

The Lampaden Counterattack

Lampaden Ridge (Rhineland-Palatinate Region, Germany). H/H. At the begining of 1945, the Patton´s Ghost Corp was pushing back German troops against the Rhine in the Saarland area. the battered American 94th Infantry Division was being replaced by 26th Infantry Division in the Lampaden area, a hilly and heavily forest zone between the Saar and Rhine rivers. The only posibility to restore the German line was a counterratack in this unexpected area unsuitable for a large scale armor movement and get off the tired Americans. The best German unit in the area was the Brenner´s 6th SS Gebirg Division. This experienced unit, well trained and equiped had to take the Lampaden ridge and exploited the success cutting the main American supply axis, the Zerf-Pellingen road. Using infiltration tactics, four SS mountain battalions supported by asault guns attacked the weak positions held by the 302rd Infantry Rgt/94th Infantry Division in a front of 15 Km. The Americans suffered a strong fighting but they were be able to stop Germans after three days.

Hedgerow Inferno

Percy, 20 Kms (S St. Lo, Normandy). H/H. After Cobra operation , the VII Army took St. Lo but the Battle of Hedgerows was far from finished. The American casualties grew seriously in front of stubborn German fighting favored by bocage country. The fighting for control of the most important road in the area (St. Lo - Periers ) had caused more than 10.000 American casualties in six days. It seems every road will be a hard test for US forces. In this situation the breakthrough to south of St Lo was currently exploited by a tight 28th Infantry Division, they must seize and secure the western bank of the Vire river of enemy forces from Hausser´s Seventh Army. The OKW ordered a strong counterattack with all available armored forces in this area to take all ground possible to west. The German forces committed were elements of Panzer Lehr, 2nd SS Panzer Das Reich and two panzergrenadiers battalions from the Bayerlein´s 116th Panzer Division. Despite initial German success, the Americans in a defensive role supported by elements of 2nd Armored Division force to stop the panzers. Late in the war, just south and west of Vienna the retreating German 1st SS Panzer Corps was order to dig in and perform a defensive/delay role against overwhelming Russian armor forces. The area they were commanded to hold consisted of heavily forested alpine slopes over 900 meters high with many deep valleys, treacherous rivers, fast flowing streams, and poor roads. The LAH and HJ Divisions were considered reasonably defeated but could still muster enough retreating units and stragglers to be considerer as full combat units and although moral was very low together they made up two reinforced Regiments with significant armor support. Four Kampf Groups (Peiper,Gross, Kling and Reitzenstein), with medium and heavy armor along with battle hardened Panzergrenadiers dug in around a 10x10 Kilometer area of Corona peak, Laaben and Hainfeld strategically placing themselves in the path of the advancing Russian hordes in hopes of delaying their advance and allow retreating units from Italy and Austria safe passage through the Golsen River Valley into the heart of Bavaria and the Alpine region of Germany to safeguard Hitler's last pocket of defense.

The Battle of Montelimar

Montelimar, SE France. Seven days after the landings the VI US Corps in the Dragoon Operation, it had penetrated 250 miles into France. The failure of Wiese´s Nineteenth Army to stop the Allies on the beach was desappointing. The difficulty Wiese faced was in using his mechanized forces to delay the Allied advance while extricating his less mobile formations. The key to his withdrawal efforts lay in preventing the Allies from cutting his one escape route: the north-south road network running parallel to the Rhone River. The Commanding General of the VI Corps Maj.Gen. Lucian Truscott, ordered the 36th Infantry Division to block the German retreat in Montelimar, a decisive position on right bank of the Rhone. Wiese recognized the importance of Montelimar as well, lead elements of the 11th Panzer Division attacked the Americans. After eight days of fight the german units was attacked and the german units suffered strong losses by artillery fire.Long convoys were destroyed, and the entire zone was literally covered with a mass of burned vehicles, equipment and dead men. There were 11.000 german casualties, 2.100 vehicles were destroyed. At Montelimar the German Nineteenth Army was virtually destroyed. Aditional comments: Historically the bridges over the Rhone river at Montelimar were destroyed by P-47 American Ground Attack aircraft during the battle. In this scenario the bridges are intact, excluding the bridge over the Rubion river mouth. The players can decided if blow it during the game.
