Fum & Gebra met when they were one month olds only, on May 2010.

Fum is a black cat. His is a Catalan name that means “smoke”.

Gebra is an owl (Tyto Alba). She was born in Andalucía, and has been trained the falconry way, which is an ancient practice in Europe and Asia. Her name is originating from the Catalan “Gebre”, that means “frost”. It has been possible to get her little domesticated because she was hand-reared, but Gebra doesn’t allow any human contact but the hand that feeds her. By this reason, when she notices some interest from the humans on her, she flies away and doesn’t come back until she feels the danger has disappeared. Gebra goes out flying daily during the falconry season that is from September to June approximately. Falconers use to hold up the birds of prey during the moulting process. When the feather replacement has fully finished there is no danger for the feathers to keep a good health during all the season.

The interplay between Fum and Gebra doesn’t happen daily. Sometimes Fum prefers to spend his time hunting, rather than accompany Gebra on her daily about half an hour flight. Then Gebra goes back to her “muda” (mews) and remains there, in the semi-darkness, during the rest of the day. Since april 21, 2012, Gebra is hunting by herself, so it's an emotional and special date for us. Actually she's feeded by human hand and hunted preys represent 30% diet, but it could be variable next months. Since summer 2011, does'nt use jesses and it's appreciable on new footages, so Gebra is not a typical falconry bird.

Though the nocturnal birds are not most appropriates for hunting in the falconry art, the beautiful of their silent flight, extremely poetic, makes that, day by day, falconers are becoming more interested on this species that are characterized by their singular nobility and by being very active as at first hour in the morning as the last at night.

Fum is a most active cat in hunting. He hunts from fine pigeons to small insects, and his stylized body makes him unique among the other cats in the same area. He is most friendly with all the persons and with the other animals in the farm. The neighbors love him and also his aroma is special, most probably because he likes to rub himself on the thymes, so characteristics of the Camp de Tarragona.

Their daily excursion time is the moment they expect and enjoy the most. Their spontaneous relationship, that nobody helped to happen, has captivated the interest of thousands of persons. A question arises when comparing with the human relationships: “if they understand each other, what’s the reason for us not to understand each other too?”
