The state of Jalisco, the capital
of which is the famous city of Guadalajara, is a sun blessed on the
Pacific coast, at the western edge of Mexico. The first "Mariachi" groups came from here in the XIXth century in the inland centre of the State of Jalisco. With an atmosphere which is always joyful, and wearing the typical "Charro" suits, these groups of itinerant musicians, sang the serenades in wedding ceremonies, the "marriages" from which their names originated. |
| The Jalisco sound, or "San
Jaliciense" is a potpourri of melodies recognised around the world,
some of which originally came from XVth century Spain. The stringed
instruments which where originally used soon came to be accompanied by
one or two trumpets. The "Mestizo" dances of Jalisco, the "Jarabes", are inspirated in the Spanish "Seguidillla", "Fandango", "Zapateado", and also in the Moorish "Zambra". The Son Jaliciense" is an indispensable part of the true Mexican Fiesta, above all the "Jarabe Tapío", also known as "the Mexican Hat Dance", which became the national folk dance. |
