| During the XIX century before the
French conquest, the fashion in Mexico was: music and dances coming from
the European Continent. Crossing the Atlantic, the "Schottische" from Central Europe, a popular dance of Scottish origin became the "Chotis". The "Polka" and the "Marzurca", of Polish origin came too but were specifically dance among fashionable circles. After the French occupation these retired to the "Rancherías" of the northern part of the country and took different musical and choreographic characteristics proper to Mexicans, before being later on influenced by the songs and dances of the West American cowboys. They are accompanied by an accordion, a guitar and a bass, and rhythmical instruments loke spoons, triangle and the "redoba", little wooden box striked by sticks. |
