CHIAPAS
The
state "Chiapas" was a land of encounters and with no doubt the
place where Maya and Tolteque cultures were born. During the XVI century
the "Chiapa" Indians where described by the missionary Bernal
Díaz as the best warriors existing in "New Spain" being
even better then the Azteques. The inhabitants of "Chiapas" were rarely dominated and for this reason a great amount of their culture was kept intact. Among their heritage we find the popular instrument of their region, the "Marimba" a sort of xylophone played by four musicians. With this music sometimes muffled and at other times cheerful, the dancers gracefully illustrate different traditional legends that demonstrate feastul events, amorous conquests, rivalites, and love. |
