LOS QUETZALES

One of the most colourful dances in our folklore is that of the Quetzals. This because of the spectacular circular head-dress formed out of a wheel framework of reeds interlaced with multicolour paper strips or ribbons. There is no record of the origin of this dance but undoubtedly it, as well, as the Aerialist and others of the northern Puebla highlands and the Totanac region, has agricultural-astronomical significance. This is borne out by the patterns in from of a cross signifying the cardinal points and a circle symbolising the rotation of time and the dance derives from the
quetzal bird and that the dancers´ornate head-dress imitates that birds´plumage. However, it is more likely that it refers to the town where it is performed, Quetzalan, Puebla.
Nearby, in a town called Yohualinchan, a similar dance is executed which according to tradition, was dedicated to the gods of maize and which is called "Los Yohalinchen".
