| Originally from the state of Veracruz, specifically from the region of the Totonacapan in the Gulf of Mexico, this dance is interpreted at the Festival of Corpus Christi or during Easter Week. The versions concerning its origins, despite the adopting of Christian figures, introduces us to the cosmogonic principles of the Totonacas, as well as the duality of life-death. The dance also serves as a vehicle for communication with the masters of the elements which lives in the four cardinal points, it is performed around a cross, or "cruceta" up which four dancers finally climb to perform vertiginous pirouettes at the climax of the ceremony, this being the moment which culminates the power and the beauty of the staging. | |
