CEREMONIA PREHISPANICA MAYA

This dance is an allusion to one of the many religious ceremonies which were practised in the ancient cultures of Mexico. For the Mayas the figure of the priest or witch-doctor was of great importance, as he had the power to prophesy, purify and decide on the direction and future of the society. The choreography includes elements which represent to the spectator the importance which these figures had within the culture:
- First: the cross formed in the centre which shows us that the most important of all was the veneration of the four stars, or the greet them before every ceremony was of primordial importance.
- Second: the priestesses or assisting maidens, who because of their purity were allowed the privilege of holding the sacred objects without profaning the place.
- The warriors: who guarded the holy place and who always visited the priest or witch doctor to ask for blessing in their battles, and to obtain strength for the fight.
- The witch doctor: who in order to test his power and omnipotence before the people, performed acts of magic and played with the elements, such as fire, which so feared by us all, and which for a long times was their most important God, as well being closely linked with the Sun.
