Grabación de CDs

CDs de mas de 700MBs

Esos CDs no son estándar... Bueno, en su día los de 700 tampoco lo eran, pero todos los vendor los adoptaron. Ahora bien, los de 800 o 850 no tiene pinta que el mercado vaya por ahí, ya que habiendo DVDs de 4.7 GB 'baratos' ahora ya carece de sentido adoptar esta tecnología.
Puedes haberlos grabado de dos formas.

• Solucion estandard, OVERBURN : Requiere a su vez dos soportes
  1. - Hardware que lo soporte. Es decir, que la grabadora/lectora sepa llegar mas allí de donde 'normalmente' acaban los CDs (unos mm más). A esto se le llama 'capacidad de overburn'. El Nero CD Speed sabe 'testear' cuanto es capaz de 'overburnear' tu grabadora.

  2. - Software de grabación que lo soporte, tipo 'Nero'

  El otro problema es que de aquí un tiempo nadie te garantiza que los grabadores/lectores que tengas entonces sean capaces de leer esos discos con overburn. [06/06/2005]

• Otras soluciones, vendor-specific : Tipo 'Gigarec' de plextor, no suelen necesitar hacer 'overburn', por que se basan en grabar 'mas denso' en CDs normales (de 700 MBs), metiendo 'más'. Aunque no necesitan que la grabadora/lectora sepa hacer overburn, sí necesitan soporte a nivel firmware para funcionar, con lo que o tienes una grabadora/lectora del vendor específico o la compatibilidad se pierde rápido.

En resumen, no todas las lectoras te van a reconocer estos CDs... pero la grabadora en la que los grabaste debería siempre.

Packet writing sw (DLA)

Es el sw que permite grabar en un CD 'por sectores', como si fuese un disco duro. Hay 3 principalmente, y ninguno es específico de un vendor de hw, si no de la casa de sw que lo comercializa :

• - DLA : Sonic
• - Incd : Nero
• - DirectCD : Roxio

Desconozco a que nivel son compatibles unos con otros...., pero cualquiera de los 3 debería funcionar en la mayoría de grabadoras/lectoras del mercado, aunque normalmente tendrás que instalar un driver UDF para poder leer estos CDs.

BIOS

The core of the operating system is stored in the two hidden system files, which are always found in a primary DOS partition. In traditional MS-DOS, the files are named IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS. These files have the same names in Windows 95/98, but the contents are changed slightly compared to the traditional DOS. This review is from the old fashioned DOS, but tells something general about the boot process of an operating system.
The DOS system formatted disk contains two hidden system files. The first, IO.SYS, must be the first entry in the root directory. MSDOS.SYS must be on entry number two.

Start-up on disk

When the start-up program has finished POST (Power On Self Test) and the loading of BIOS routines, the boot process starts. It follows the following steps:

• MBR is read first. The sector number of the primary partition's boot record is found here.
• A small boot program is read from the primary partition's boot record. That activates the loading of the two hidden files.
• IO.SYS is saved to working memory. Besides creating an interface "downwards" to the BIOS programs, IO.SYS includes a small program called SYSINIT. This program starts the next steps of the boot process.
• Now MSDOS.SYS is read from the disk.
• Then SYSINIT looks in root directory for a file named CONFIG.SYS. All commands in CONFIG.SYS are executed, gradually configuring the PC to have a ready and usable DOS.
• Then SYSINIT looks for the command interpreter COMMAND.COM. If that is not found, we will get an error message about this. When it is found, AUTOEXEC.BAT, which contains the last information for personal configuration of the PC, is executed.

  Dual Boot  

Use FDISK, or other disk partitioning tool, to create a new Primary partition. Mark the old primary partition inactive. ( boot from a W95 or W98 startup diskette and run the FDISK that comes with it ) Mark the new one active and bootable. Then, when you install the OS, it will see the new partition, and will name it C:, and will install there. To boot your old OS, swap the active partition flags, which is what a boot manager does for you on the fly.

How to create a bootable CD

Easy CD-Creator

1. Place your newly created and tested boot floppy in your floppy drive and start up Easy CD Creator.
2. Click File, CD Layout Properties. Change the volume name if you like, to say BOOTCD. Then click the Data Settings tab.
3. In the file system combo box, select ISO9660, then enable the Bootable checkbox by clicking it.
4. Then click OK. You will be prompted to put your bootable floppy in the drive. Click OK again.
5. Easy CD will read the boot information. Once done you should have two files in the CD Layout Window called BOOTCAT.BIN and BOOTIMG.BIN
6. Add any other files you wish to the CD. Note: These files can only be accessed when the real mode drivers fire up, assigning your CD-ROM to the next available drive letter.
7. Click the Record button on the toolbar to create your bootable CD.

Moore's Law x Page's Law = 1

Moore's law, named after Gordon Moore of Intel says that the number of transistors on a chip will double every eighteen months. That will result in the speed of the computer doubling as well.

Then along comes Larry Page of Google. He says that software will devolve to half speed every 18 months. The result is that faster CPU's are required to achieve stand still performance.

"Page's Law is painfully true. It helps to explain why 2001-era PCs which ran Windows XP just fine are incapable of running Windows XP SP3 well, let alone Windows Vista. Actually, it explains, in part, why so many people feel the need to buy new computers every couple of years. We're not buying faster machines so we can work faster -- we're buying faster machines to compensate for the speed lost to more bloated, inefficient software."

Management : 9 things I learned:

1. Be generous with praise. Everyone wants it and it’s one of the easiest things to give. Plus, praise from the CEO goes a lot farther than you might think. Praise every improvement that you see your team members make. Once you’re comfortable delivering praise one-on-one to an employee, try praising them in front of others.
2. Get rid of the managers. Projects without project managers? That doesn’t seem right! Try it. Removing the project lead or supervisor and empowering your staff to work together as a team rather then everyone reporting to one individual can do wonders. Think about it. What’s worse than letting your supervisor down? Letting your team down! Allowing people to work together as a team, on an equal level with their co-workers, will often produce better projects faster. People will come in early, stay late, and devote more of their energy to solving problems.
3. Make your ideas theirs. People hate being told what to do. Instead of telling people what you want done; ask them in a way that will make them feel like they came up with the idea. “I’d like you to do it this way” turns into “Do you think it’s a good idea if we do it this way?”
4. Never criticize or correct. No one, and I mean no one, wants to hear that they did something wrong. If you’re looking for a de-motivator, this is it. Try an indirect approach to get people to improve, learn from their mistakes, and fix them. Ask, “Was that the best way to approach the problem? Why not? Have any ideas on what you could have done differently?” Then you’re having a conversation and talking through solutions, not pointing a finger.
5. Make everyone a leader. Highlight your top performers’ strengths and let them know that because of their excellence, you want them to be the example for others. You’ll set the bar high and they’ll be motivated to live up to their reputation as a leader.
6. Take an employee to lunch once a week. Surprise them. Don’t make an announcement that you’re establishing a new policy. Literally walk up to one of your employees, and invite them to lunch with you. It’s an easy way to remind them that you notice and appreciate their work.
7. Give recognition and small rewards. These two things come in many forms: Give a shout out to someone in a company meeting for what she has accomplished. Run contests or internal games and keep track of the results on a whiteboard that everyone can see. Tangible awards that don’t break the bank can work too. Try things like dinner, trophies, spa services, and plaques.
8. Throw company parties. Doing things as a group can go a long way. Have a company picnic. Organize birthday parties. Hold a happy hour. Don’t just wait until the holidays to do a company activity; organize events throughout the year to remind your staff that you’re all in it together.
9. Share the rewards—and the pain. When your company does well, celebrate. This is the best time to let everyone know that you’re thankful for their hard work. Go out of your way to show how far you will go when people help your company succeed. If there are disappointments, share those too. If you expect high performance, your team deserves to know where the company stands. Be honest and transparent.

Management : staying productive

1. Work backwards from goals to milestones to tasks. Writing “launch company website” at the top of your to-do list is a sure way to make sure you never get it done. Break down the work into smaller and smaller chunks until you have specific tasks that can be accomplished in a few hours or less: Sketch a wireframe, outline an introduction for the homepage video, etc. That’s how you set goals and actually succeed in crossing them off your list.
2. Stop multi-tasking. No, seriously—stop. Switching from task to task quickly does not work. In fact, changing tasks more than 10 times in a day makes you dumber than being stoned. When you’re stoned, your IQ drops by five points. When you multitask, it drops by an average of 10 points, 15 for men, five for women (yes, men are three times as bad at multitasking than women).
3. Be militant about eliminating distractions. Lock your door, put a sign up, turn off your phone, texts, email, and instant messaging. In fact, if you know you may sneak a peek at your email, set it to offline mode, or even turn off your Internet connection. Go to a quiet area and focus on completing one task.
4. Schedule your email. Pick two or three times during the day when you’re going to use your email. Checking your email constantly throughout the day creates a ton of noise and kills your productivity.
5. Use the phone. Email isn’t meant for conversations. Don’t reply more than twice to an email. Pick up the phone instead.
6. Work on your own agenda. Don’t let something else set your day. Most people go right to their emails and start freaking out. You will end up at inbox-zero, but accomplish nothing. After you wake up, drink water so you rehydrate, eat a good breakfast to replenish your glucose, then set prioritized goals for the rest of your day.
7. Work in 60 to 90 minute intervals. Your brain uses up more glucose than any other bodily activity. Typically you will have spent most of it after 60-90 minutes. (That’s why you feel so burned out after super long meetings.) So take a break: Get up, go for a walk, have a snack, do something completely different to recharge. And yes, that means you need an extra hour for breaks, not including lunch, so if you’re required to get eight hours of work done each day, plan to be there for 9.5-10 hours
